2006 Report: Good so far.
New Years Eve: We dropped off the kids at Bestemor and Farfar's on New Years Eve. Jana and I had a much needed 'date night' watching the ball drop on TV in front of a cozy fire. Went to bed early. Selpt in.
Noon on New Years Day: Time for the 4th annual Polar Bear Swim at Three Tree Point! The ultimate cure for a hangover. My neighbor posted
photos.
3pm New Years Day: A 48mph gust blew through Three Tree Point folding back the roof on my neighbors house! (his wind meter registered the gust) Time to go windsurfing! I rigged my 5.9 and was totally overpowered. I caught one big air - at the top of the jump i was completely out of control headed for a crash landing and I remember thinking to myself "I'm going to have to pick up the pieces after this one!" Yup, total yard sale.
It started getting REALLY windy, the tide was high (smashing against the bulkheads), and then - Doh! - my boom came untied! There i was, broken down in the sound trying to re-rig before i was swept around the point. I finally made an emergency run towards shore, but there was nowhere to land. Big logs crashing against the bulkheads. No beach. 30-40mph gusts. Then, I found a boat ramp that looked like a safe place to land. I decided the only way to get to shore was to disconnect my sail and board (the biggest no-no in windsurfing!) I took my board to shore, timing the swells and missing the big logs... a neighbor gave me some rope and i headed back out to save my sail.
The sail was getting pounded with logs and headed out with the tide around the point. I ran through many yards and finally caught-up with the sail on the huge rock bulkhead on the point. And like a gift from the wind-gods... the sail was practically handed to me on the huge boulders. I pulled it to shore and to my surprise there were NO HOLES in the sail! There were a few rips in a batton sleeve, a broken rope, a few holes in my board, but overall - not bad! :-)
